What is Your Favourite Sport?

2C students spent the week learning about data analysis. Once we learned how to make tally marks and interpret graphs, it was time to create our own surveys and input the results into a graphing web app.  Each student designed a question, asked their classmates to choose an answer from the list of responses, and recorded the responses with tally marks. We used Learning with NCES Kids' Zone's Create a Graph to make bar graphs and pie charts with the results.

Dear Friend...

2C used the free version of Bill Atkinson PhotoCard to send postcards to a friend. First, students drew a portrait of their friend using Drawing Pad and saved it to the iPad's photo album. Then, students combined the portrait with a personal message, in order to ask questions of their friend.  Postcards were shared via the class email account and printed. Upon receiving the postcards, students responded with snail mail letters. We will use these responses as a starting point for writing friendship poetry.

What's for Lunch?

As part of our nutrition unit, 2C students brought in their favourite cookbooks. Students worked individually or in pairs to select a recipe and "publish" it using a Pages recipe template. We will be using the recipes to create a top secret Mother's Day surprise...

The students found Pages simple to use because of its touch-screen functionality. The photos in particular were easier and quicker to save and access than they would have been on a desktop computer. The major challenge on my end was that I would have liked to customize the template for the students, but because the iPads are not on our school's network, the only way to share the template would have been via email.

K2 had a wonderful time this week using Teach Me: Kindergarten.  They had great fun creating scenes with the reward stickers they earned when completing a level. It was a great way to reinforce the students' sight word development as well as their developing math skills!

iEnrichment

The students in the Grade 5 enrichment program have been very motivated to integrate iPads into their most recent project.  This project required the students to take a variety of personal photographs to develop a photographic storyboard.  The students then used the iPads to create a comic strip with speech bubbles that called for effective word choices to evoke the strong emotion reflected in each photo. The skills that they gained from this project furthered their development of vocabulary and use of descriptive language necessary to enhance their writing skills.  Due to the personal nature of the project (family photos), we are unable to share them online.
